You’ve probably mistaken the term “hot water extraction” with “steam cleaning” once in your life before. They are two entirely different methods used in the cleaning industry. The main difference between the two is the temperature.
Hot water extraction
Hot water extraction as the name suggests uses hot water. Professionals use a special machine that can inject clean water with detergent into the carpet. The machine will simultaneously suck up the soil concentrated water. The water usually reaches 100°C and produces steam. However, the steam is useless for cleaning purposes.
Steam cleaning
Steam cleaning uses actual steam. The water needs to get past the boiling point to convert the liquid into gas. The required temperature sits at a minimum of 200°C.

When to use which
Steam cleaning is definitely the more popular term compared to hot water extraction. However, this does not always equate to the more effective option. The effectiveness of the machine depends on the soiling situation and surface types.
Hot water extraction works best for carpet and upholstery. The method uses a low volume of moisture. Additionally, the machine sucks up excess water. Hence, quickening the drying process. Your carpet needs to be as dry as possible after the cleaning is complete to prevent mold. It is important to note that professionals will ask customers to turn on the fan and/or open windows for lesser drying time.
On another note, steam cleaning best works on concrete and water-resistant surfaces. Such as sinks, countertops, and tile floors. Furthermore, due to the high temperature of steam, it also sanitizes surfaces, instead of just removing physical dirt. Steam is also effective in removing grease and oil stains. Additionally, steam cleaning is known as the greener option as it does not require the use of detergents.
