Remove Urine Odour in 6 Easy Ways

Children have accidents. That is a normal occurrence in a parent’s life. Your mattress should be free of dust mites, odour, and other forms of dirt to get the best sleep. With peeing accidents, you can expect yellow stains to form and a bad odour to stick to your mattress. You can avoid these outcomes by investing in a mattress protector. If you think that they are expensive, we have prepared 6 easy ways for you to remove urine odour from your bed.

Before using any cleaning agent, make sure the surface is as dry as possible. If there’s a puddle or the mattress is wet to the touch, use paper towels to absorb the excess moisture. Refrain from rubbing on the mattress, but blot or dab only.

Laundry detergent

The easiest way to remove urine odour is by using laundry detergent. Spread the detergent on the affected area and let it soak for 20 minutes or longer, depending on the strength of the odour. Then, with a clean towel, wipe off the remaining detergent.

For the best outcome, use an enzyme-based laundry detergent. The enzyme will help break down the uric acid that contributes to the bad odour.

Vinegar

Vinegar is another great way to remove the smell of urine. In a spray bottle, mix 50/50 white distilled vinegar and cold water. By using a spray bottle, it will prevent over saturating the mattress. Hence, speeding up the drying process. Spray towards the direction of the urine. Leave the vinegar solution to soak for 10-20 minutes.

Baking soda

Baking soda is a low cost, non-toxic natural deodorizer. Commonly used in the fridge, baking soda eats up the foul odour. After applying the laundry detergent or vinegar, sprinkle some baking soda. The more, the better. Then, cover the affected area with plastic overnight. On the next day, vacuum the remaining baking soda before putting the bedsheets.

You can also choose to mix essential oils with baking soda. This will then leave your mattress smelling like lavenders, etc.

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a common household cleaning agent. It is effective in removing dirt, urine stains and odour.

Mix the following ingredients to remove the urine odour.

  • 8oz of hydrogen peroxide
  • 3 tbsp. of baking soda
  • 1 tsp. of detergent

With a spray bottle, spray a generous amount on the urine covered area. Dab on the mattress to encourage the chemicals to react with the impurities. Leave to dry.

You can also mix hydrogen peroxide, detergent and vinegar for the same effect.

Air freshener

You can use air freshener after the cleaning process. Spraying air freshener without cleaning the urine first may just mask the odour. This will then worsen the smell overtime.
