6 Things to Consider When Buying An Office Chair

Today’s office work culture consists of hours upon hours of sitting on office chairs. Historically, long periods of sitting on uncomfortable office chairs have proven to be negatively impacting our bodies. This has brought forth a need for an ergonomic chair. An ergonomic chair is designed with long-term spinal comfort and health in mind.

Lumbar support

Any office chair that’s worth the purchase will give you good lumbar support. Our natural tendency when working on our desk is to slouch or lean forward. Unfortunately, this action leads to poor posture and back discomfort. Lumbar support helps promote good posture by making sure that your spine is fully able to rest on the seat. To test if an office chair provides you with enough lumbar support, sit up straight with your head, spine, and hip in alignment. Then, sit back while maintaining the position.

Adjustable backrest and height

When buying an office chair, make sure you can adjust the backrest and height. This is an especially important feature if you’re sharing the chair, i.e. in a co-working space. As all bodies are different, certain settings that fit one person may not work well with you.

For maximum comfort, adjust the height so your knees are bent at a right angle, and your eyes can look straight at your computer without straining your neck.

Mobility

Why get up and walk when you can just wheel yourself away? Easy mobility with swivels and casters (or wheelies) adds to the usefulness of an office chair. Admittedly, getting up to walk is probably a much-needed exercise when you’re stuck in the office for 8 hours but swivels and casters can increase your efficiency. Instead of getting up to get a file that’s a little bit out of your reach on the right, you can just spin your chair around and wheel your chair.

Breathable material and padding

Choose office chairs with breathable material and padding. Avoid seats that are too soft or too hard as they will cause discomfort and pain when used for an extended amount of time.

Durability

The cost you pay for your office chair may be representative of the durability. When purchasing, check the sturdiness of the mechanics. Flimsy materials and products will usually be obvious when you test them.

Maintenance pro tip: Regularly deep clean your office chairs for a cleaner, healthier and long-lasting investment.

Aesthetics

Office aesthetics might be last on this list but it is not any less important. Excellent office designs, including your carpet and furniture, reflect your company’s core values, attract customers and talents, and affect employees’ productivity. Traditional office chairs may signify a serious, corporate-like environment while colorful seatings in the form of bean bags may show that you’re a laid-back startup organization.
