Well, I’m here to tell you that it shouldn’t. Old grease and dirt in your oven can affect your food in terms of smell, taste, and may even cause health problems. If you’ve never done it, you may be wondering how to clean your oven. We’ve prepared three simple methods you can use.
How frequent do you need to clean your oven?
With the pandemic looming over our lives, we’re eating out less and cooking our meals at home more. With the hype of bread making and baked feta cheese pasta, your oven is most likely due for deep cleaning.
As a general rule of thumb, for avid bakers and cooks, you should clean your oven at least once every 3 months. If you’re only using your oven once or twice a month, a semi-annual or annual cleaning will suffice. You can also observe for any of these telltale signs that you need to clean your oven:
- Appearance (crust, residue, grease, or grime)
- Odour
- Smoke
How to clean your oven with baking soda and vinegar
What you need:
- Spray bottle
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- Water
- Rubber gloves
- Sponge
- Brush
- Damp cloth
- Plastic scraper or spatula
Step 1: Make sure the oven is off, empty and the temperature is cool.
Step 2: Make a paste with 2-3 tbsp. of water and 1/2 a cup of baking soda.
Step 3: Apply the paste to your oven walls and floor with a brush (smaller ones like an old toothbrush will help you reach the nooks and crannies). Stay clear of the heating elements.
Step 4: Leave the paste to sit for at least 12 hours.
Step 5: Then, dampen your cloth and wipe the oven. Scrape any residue with a spatula or plastic scraper.
Step 6: In a spray bottle, mix equal parts water and white vinegar. Spray your oven door—steering clear of that gasket. Wipe the surfaces down with a clean cloth.
How to clean your oven with lemons
What you need:
- 2 lemons
- Water
- Oven safe mixing bowl
- Rubber gloves
- Damp cloth
Step 1: Cut the lemons in half and place them in a mixing bowl. Add in water.
Step 3: Set your oven to 120°C.
Step 4: Once it’s preheated, insert the bowl and leave for an hour.
Step 5: After one hour, turn off the oven. When the oven has cooled down to a safe temperature (not cold), wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth. Scrub on any stains with a sponge.

How to clean your oven with cleaning products
What you need:
- Rubber gloves
- Safety glasses
- Face mask
- Oven cleaner
- Damp cloth
- Sponge
Step 1: Make sure the oven is off, empty and the temperature is cool.
Step 2: With store-bought oven cleaners, practice extra caution by wearing safety glasses and a face mask as some people may be more sensitive to certain chemicals.
Step 3: Spray your oven cleaner as much as you need. Make sure to avoid the heating elements.
Step 4: Close the oven door. Let the cleaner sit according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 5. Wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth. With a sponge, scrub any leftover residue.
Before calling it a day, make sure to wipe the oven rack, door handle, and outer surface as well. Once that’s done, your oven is good and ready for your next tasteful baking session!
